Due 2/16 by the start of class.

Working in Teams: Stepping Stones progress

For the coming week, teams should start the following (I’ll send more specific feedback to your initial work on Friday):

  1. For the pre-collected variables and the two variables you’ve started collecting yourselves, continue revising a brief description to accompany each variable in the style we outlined in classes (we’ll almost certainly update this more as we see one another’s work and build on ideas so far to make it even better). In addition, begin to search for and make note of any policy changes or events that should be noted on the figures to help provide context to the measures.
  2. Revise the script to download the first two measures if needed (you’ll hear more from me) – things I’ll be looking for include file structure and explanatory comments as well as validation of code.
  3. Write an initial R script to download the third measure in their set and review city excel file for background and issues.
  4. Start a separate script that reads in all of the measures you’re working with so far (the pre-collected and the measures you’ve already collected) and begin playing with visual representation of the data!
  5. I’ll give team-specific feedback on next steps around variables that aren’t obviously available online.

In subsequent weeks, we’ll start putting #1 and #4 elements together in R markdown files, but for this week, focus on creating/updating data collection and preparation scripts (a separate script for each measure), a script to try out some visualizations for the measures you have so far (the third new measure doesn’t need to be included in this yet), and a document that drafts some text for each measure and notes any events/changes across the period that should be noted.

This work should be submitted to the stepping stones channel in slack so we can better learn from one another.
